: since you're supporting romney, the candidate who is running behind, you are supporting him, right? then you also need to lower the stakes for wednesday's first of these presidential debates, like this. >> frankly, i can't remember the last time there was one of these comments that grabbed everybody's attention because frankly the candidates are too well prepared. they're well scripted. >> reporter: and like this. >> i don't think one event is going to make or break this campaign. >> reporter: but definitely governor christie, definitely not like this. >> i'll tell you, bob, thursday morning, you're going to be scratching your heads and saying, wow, we have a barn burner for the next 33 days. >> reporter: the thing is, when you say that, the president's senior adviser says stuff like this. >> they expect to come out of this with a race fundamentally changed. what does that mean? if it is going to fundamentally change, that means in seven or ten days from now you'll see ohio tied, states like iowa tied. that's what matters here. >> reporter: like they say, governor christie, there i

to happen in this presidential election right now. mitt romney needs to draw the contrast. i think that mitt romney needs to say something along the line, when i was saving the olympics after 9-11, where was barak obama? who do you want? make the decision. this is a country in crisis once again. economic security, energy security, national security. so draw the contrast. i think that's what we tried to do in this ad. >> steve: larry sabato said that ad that you're running now is the most devastating contrast ad he's ever seen before. >> my team will be very happy to have that. now i got to give a trophy or something, i guess. >> eric: colonel, we have to read this statement. this is from mr. murphy, his campaign. he said, quote, allen west is shamelessly attacking him for a mistake he made as a teen-ager, which he had discussed at length in the media as a mistake learned from. >> first of all, no one down in south florida knew about this and had not been discussed. i think it's represencible that they should talk about a contrast when they started off running ads with me stealing money from

if that's even possible right now. the public broadly speaking expects mitt romney to win. low expectations i suppose. the history as your comments suggest is that debates don't tend to change the trajectory of a presidential race very much. there has been a few cases where they have but just a few you are looking at this stage if you are a romney voter or fan for something that would change the apparent course of the election which you look at the thing nationally and it appears to be a pretty tight race. if you look at it in the key states. president obama appears to be ahead nearly everywhere. and by a significant margins in some places such as ohio where it's several points. now, you can't say that it's over. it certainly is not straight line projections are very dangerous in politics. things can change. always on the lookout for something to change it debate might much although it hasn't happened very often. >> bill: i think it's going to happen this year one way or the other. this is the stat that i will point to the rat muffin poll has the president up by three which is

since august." now, they're right debates are about moments but ain an amusin image. mitt romney sitting in a room peppering them with zingers. i would like to be on the wall hearing that. >> not about zingers, serious substantive policy. and in "the washington post" showing a virtual dead heat with the president and mitt romney. obama with a slight edge. 49-47%. t also in this survey, it delves down into the expectations game for this debate. what can you tell me about those numbers, peter? >> reporter: despite what chris christie said, and that is sort of another mixed message coming out of the romney campaign, romney is winning the expectations game if you look at the polls. more likely to win the debate, president obama 55%. mitt romney just 31% of likely voters expect him to win the debate. that's a good place to be for him going in there, but like you said, there's a lot of stuff in this poll. sort of mirrors what we've seen in a lot of recent national and state polls. president obama has advantages on a range of issues, however, one thing tilting in romney the direction. interesti
